Unloving the Past

Unloving the Past

I loved you once,
and though time marched on,
its steady drumbeat couldn’t drown
the echo of your name.
I packed the memories away,
sealed them in boxes,
stacked high in the attic of my mind,
but dust never dulls a heartbeat.
I burned bridges,
watched flames devour
the paths we walked,
yet in the ashes,
your shadow still lingered, familiar.
I whispered to the night,
pleaded with the stars
to unweave the threads
that bound my heart to yours.
But even the sky
remained indifferent.
And though I wandered far,
sought refuge in new embraces,
their warmth couldn’t thaw
the frozen corners
where you remained.
I could unlearn your touch,
forget the cadence of your voice,
but I could never
unlove the ghost of you
that lives inside my chest.
